Count the minutes of a typical solo shooting
session and an uncomfortable truth appears. For every shot taken, the player
jogs after the ball, picks it up, dribbles back, and resets. An hour on the
court often contains barely twenty minutes of actual shooting. Serious players
have always known the solution is another person, someone to rebound, pass, and
watch their form. The problem is that partners, and even more so coaches, are
not available on demand.
LUMISTAR, a company based in Los Angeles that
already sells AI tennis training machines, built CARRY as its answer for
basketball. It is described as the world's first AI quad-camera movable
basketball training robot, and the description captures both halves of the
idea. It moves with the player rather than standing fixed in one spot, and it
watches the game through four camera lenses rather than following a preset
program. The machine debuted publicly at CES in Las Vegas, where technology
journalists tested it hands-on, and it is currently funding on Kickstarter with
deliveries planned for later this year.
Feeding balls is only half the machine's job.
While the player shoots, the AI analyzes the entire shooting sequence from the
legs to the fingertips, a feature the company calls power chain analysis, aimed
at optimizing how force travels through the body into the shot. The system maps
each player's mechanics against elite player profiles, tracks shot trajectory
and backspin in real time, and builds performance heatmaps showing exactly
where on the floor a player scores and struggles. Every session generates reports
stored automatically in the cloud, and the AI uses them to produce a customized
training plan for the next workout.
Players shape their sessions through DIY drill
modes as well. Spot-up modes toggle between fixed-range, fixed-angle, and free
shooting; advanced drills let players set repetitions per spot and wait times
between passes; and a lead-pass mode turns the machine into a floor general
that feeds passes on the move, training off-ball movement and catch-and-shoot
stability. Control runs through either a 10-inch touchscreen on the machine or
a mobile app, and group practice is built in, since the system tracks up to
five players simultaneously, alternating passes and displaying live scores and
rankings that turn solo drills into competition.
Portability shaped the hardware. The main unit
weighs 77 pounds, rolls on wheels with a handle, and fits a footprint small
enough for a garage, while a carbon fiber and aluminum frame on a wide pyramid
base keeps it planted during play. Setup takes about a minute, with an
automated net system that extends at the press of a single button. Power is
equally flexible, offering roughly four hours of high-intensity battery play, a
fast charge from 20 to 80 percent in under two hours, an unlimited AC plug-in mode,
and even a USB port for charging a phone courtside.
Safety earned its own system. Integrated
sensors monitor the court and instantly halt all serving functions if anyone
steps inside a nine-foot protection zone around the machine, a necessary
safeguard for a device that fires basketballs in spaces shared with children
and teammates.
CARRY belongs to a visible shift in sports
training, where AI and robotics move from analyzing games afterward to
participating in practice as it happens. The appeal is access: structured,
data-informed training of the kind professional academies provide, available on
a neighborhood court. Early hands-on impressions from technology press were
positive, with reviewers noting that the varied modes keep training fresh and
that shot tracking turns every session into a report.
The honest caveats are clear. The machine is
currently a crowdfunding campaign with deliveries still ahead, its early price
of roughly $2,400 rises to a planned retail of $4,999, and no robot replaces
the judgment of a human coach or the unpredictability of a live defender. What
it does replace is the wasted half of practice, the chasing and resetting, and
for players measuring progress in thousands of repetitions, that arithmetic may
justify the machine.
