Towing a conventional travel trailer behind an electric vehicle tends to cut into range badly, often enough to make longer road trips impractical without frequent charging stops. Karoo Oy, a Finnish company, built its Adventure Camper as an EV-friendly travel trailer specifically to reduce that penalty, prioritizing towability and aerodynamic performance from the earliest design stage rather than treating drag as an afterthought. The trailer is currently available for pre-order rather than general retail sale.

Karoo frames the trailer as more than a place to sleep on the road: the company describes it as a flexible, modular travel companion meant to support independent stays away from campsite hookups, while still connecting a driver back to the outdoors through features like an opening gull-wing side door alongside a standard wide entrance and a separate rear door.

What the Real-World Towing Tests Actually Showed

Karoo commissioned towing tests comparing its Adventure Camper against a conventional reference trailer, conducted under real-world driving conditions in Northern Finland along a route with rolling terrain and roughly 336 meters of total elevation gain. The test used a Polestar 3 electric vehicle and a Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid as tow vehicles, compared against a specific reference trailer, a Knauss Sport 400 LK, that was about 120 kilograms lighter than the Karoo Adventure Camper despite the comparison.

The results favored aerodynamics over weight. Towing the Karoo trailer increased the electric vehicle's energy consumption by 9.4 kWh per 100 kilometers, compared with a 20.1 kWh increase for the reference trailer, bringing total consumption to 29.3 kWh per 100 km versus 40 kWh per 100 km. That translated into 36.5% more driving range for the electric vehicle while towing Karoo, an additional 101 kilometers in absolute terms with the specific vehicle tested. Towing with the combustion-engine vehicle showed a similar pattern: fuel consumption rose 48.53% behind the Karoo trailer, versus a 94.12% increase behind the reference trailer, despite the Karoo Adventure Camper weighing 12% more.

Living Off-Grid: Power, Water, and Safety Built In

Beyond how it tows, the Adventure Camper is built to support stays away from campsite utilities. Karoo lists an integrated solar panel alongside a choice of two battery capacities, 2.5 or 5.1 kWh, giving buyers a way to size power capacity to how independently they plan to travel. Separate fresh and grey water tanks, a gas and electric water heater, and a full bathroom with a cassette toilet and shower round out the systems needed to stay self-sufficient for a stretch without hookups.

Security and convenience features run through the same system: an electric lock, a GPS tracker, and a smart alarm system are built in, while touch screen controls and a companion mobile app let an owner manage the trailer's functions, including remotely. A pull-out kitchen, folding faucet, gas cooker, and refrigerator handle cooking, and the cabin sleeps two adults and two children across its layout.

Karoo states that it offers a 2-year full warranty covering manufacturing or material defects, along with a separate 5-year leak warranty. The company also states it is building a sales and service network to serve customers nationwide and that customers can obtain spare parts through its dealers.
