What if an electric fire truck could reach an aircraft fire faster than diesel, shield firefighters from toxic exhaust, and cut emissions by 75 percent at once?

Picture a fire station at an airport. The
trucks inside are massive, always ready, and for decades they have run on
diesel. Every time one starts, backs in, or idles on standby, the crew breathes
what comes out of the exhaust. Fire services around the world have grown
increasingly alarmed by this, because long-term exposure to diesel fumes and
other carcinogens is now recognized as a serious health threat to firefighters.
In other words, the vehicle built to protect people was quietly harming the
people inside it.
Oshkosh Airport Products, a subsidiary of the
American manufacturer Oshkosh Corporation, built the Striker Volterra to change
that equation. It is an electric fire truck designed for aircraft rescue and
firefighting, known in the industry as an ARFF vehicle. Rather than a concept
for trade shows, it is a working machine already on duty at major airports. The
goal behind it is refreshingly simple: respond faster, protect the crew, and
pollute far less, all without sacrificing a single drop of firefighting power.
Here is the surprising part. Going electric did
not slow this truck down; it made it quicker. The Striker Volterra pairs a
battery with a conventional engine through a patented energy management system.
In everyday driving, the electric fire truck runs purely on battery power, and
when maximum performance is needed, the engine joins in automatically without
the driver doing anything. The result is acceleration from 0 to 50 mph in 25
seconds or less, which is 28 percent faster than conventional diesel models. At
an aircraft emergency, where every second shapes the outcome, that improvement
matters enormously.
The numbers behind daily operations are just as
practical. The truck reaches a top speed of 72 mph, travels up to 44 miles on a
single charge, and can operate on battery power for more than six hours. That
may sound modest next to a passenger car, but an airport fire truck lives
differently. It waits, responds in short bursts, and returns to base. For that
rhythm, the battery covers most of the workday, and overall emissions drop by
75 percent compared to conventional models.
The deepest benefits appear where passengers
never look. Inside the station, the Striker Volterra enters, parks, and stands
by in fully electric mode, which means the crew no longer inhales diesel
exhaust in their own workplace. The cab itself follows a Clean Cab design with
carcinogen-reduction options, known as CARE, aimed at keeping harmful particles
away from the people who spend their shifts inside. Additionally, the truck
offers industry-leading forward visibility, helping drivers navigate crowded
airfields safely.
The clever engineering continues on the move.
Regenerative braking converts the truck's motion back into electricity,
recharging the battery while reducing heat and wear on the brakes. The vehicle
can also pump water while driving, a function called pump and roll, powered by
the battery. Even when pumping from a standstill, the system adjusts itself to
use only the power required, cutting both noise and emissions during an
operation. Every function a diesel truck performs, this one performs more
cleanly and often more quietly.
The proof is in the deployments. King County
International Airport in Seattle received the first hybrid electric airport
fire truck delivered in the United States, which entered service in 2025.
Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport went much further, placing six Striker
Volterra vehicles officially into service in November 2025, making it the
largest operator of the electric fire truck in the country. The airport's fire
chief pointed to faster response times as the key reason for the switch, with
safety and environmental gains coming as welcome bonuses.
The map keeps expanding beyond America, too.
Groupe ADP, which operates the airports of Paris, signed the first contract of
its kind in Europe to bring the vehicle to Paris-Le Bourget, and a fourth unit
has since been sold to the French capital. Japan's Ministry of Defense acquired
one as part of its push toward carbon neutrality. Furthermore, Oshkosh
showcased the truck at CES 2026 in Las Vegas, placing an airport fire vehicle
alongside the world's most talked-about consumer technology. For a machine most
travelers never notice, that is remarkable company.
Emergency vehicles were supposed to be the last
to electrify. They are heavy, they cannot afford downtime, and lives depend on
their reliability. Consequently, the Striker Volterra carries significance
beyond airports. It demonstrates that electric drive technology is now
dependable enough for the most demanding job imaginable: racing toward a
burning aircraft. When fire chiefs at major international hubs trust battery
power in life-or-death situations, the case for electrifying delivery trucks,
buses, and municipal fleets becomes much harder to dismiss.
There are honest caveats. The Striker Volterra
is a hybrid rather than a fully electric vehicle, keeping an engine on board as
backup for extended emergencies. That is a sensible compromise, not a flaw, for
equipment that can never say "battery empty" at the wrong moment.
Even so, the direction is unmistakable. The electric fire truck has moved from
an industry experiment to active duty on three continents, and each new airport
that adopts one makes the next decision easier.
