Dr. David Tan spent years standing on the
sidelines of his child's soccer games holding a phone instead of watching the
match. As a computer vision expert, he understood exactly why the footage never
looked as good as it should: a handheld phone shakes, drifts out of focus, and
forces a parent to choose between cheering and filming. Meanwhile, clubs that
could afford professional camera systems still paid ongoing subscription fees
just to access their own game footage.
Tan built XbotGo, a company based in Mountain
View, California, to remove that choice entirely. Its newest product, Falcon,
is a standalone 4K camera that films and tracks a game on its own once it is
switched on, requiring no phone, no operator, and no monthly payment for its
core features. The camera reached global public sale in March 2026, after
debuting at CES in Las Vegas earlier that year and drawing more than one
million dollars in pledges within its first two hours on Kickstarter.
Falcon's core design pairs two lenses for two
different jobs. One camera records dedicated true 4K footage of the full field
or court, while a second camera, with a 106-degree wide field of view, feeds an
onboard AI processor that tracks the movement of players and the ball in real
time. Running at 6 TOPS of processing power, the system follows the action
automatically, keeping play centered in frame without a person adjusting the
camera.
The tracking itself adapts to what is happening
in the game rather than following one fixed rule. Falcon can recognize jersey
numbers and lock onto a single player for an entire match, useful for a parent
following one child through a busy field of teammates and opponents. When a
jersey lacks a visible number, a person can tap that player once in the
companion app, and the camera continues tracking them from that point. The
system supports automatic tracking across more than 10 sports, including
soccer, basketball, ice hockey, football, lacrosse, and handball, adjusting its
tracking approach to fit each sport's pace and layout.
Filming an outdoor game means dealing with
weather, heat, and long hours, and Falcon's hardware is built around those
conditions. The camera carries an IPX5 water resistance rating and is
engineered to keep operating in temperatures up to 39.6 degrees Celsius,
conditions common on summer tournament weekends. A 9,600 mAh battery supports
approximately 4 hours of continuous recording, long enough for most single
games or practice sessions, and recharges over a Type-C port in about 3 hours.
The camera rotates a full 360 degrees and tilts
across a 160-degree range, letting it reposition itself to follow play across
an entire field rather than a fixed zone. Three physical preset buttons allow
quick mode switching without opening the app, and footage is saved to external
microSD storage supporting up to 1TB, giving families or coaches enough space
for a full season of recorded games.
Recording is only the first half of what Falcon
offers. Its companion app connects over Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2, letting
users stream games live at no cost, and includes AI-powered editing tools that
generate highlight clips from a full game recording automatically. The app also
provides 20GB of free cloud storage, and XbotGo has stated that its core
recording, tracking, and editing features carry no subscription fee, a
deliberate contrast with club and league systems that often charge ongoing
access costs for game footage.
That pricing approach targets a specific
audience directly. Youth sports families, coaches building highlight reels for
college recruiting, and clubs sharing match footage with their communities have
historically needed either an expensive fixed camera system or a person
dedicated to filming every game. Falcon is positioned as a single purchase that
replaces both.
The broader significance of a product like
Falcon lies in what it removes from youth and amateur sports: the requirement
that someone stop participating in order to document it. Coaches reviewing
practice footage, parents building a record of their child's development, and
clubs sharing games with distant family members have all traditionally depended
on someone giving up their own experience of the game to operate a camera.
There are practical limits worth noting. Falcon
depends on adequate lighting and a reasonably clear view of the field to track
accurately; its 4-hour battery life requires planning around longer tournament
days, and features like AI game analysis remain an upcoming add-on rather than
something available today. Even so, a camera that can be mounted, switched on,
and left to record an entire game addresses a specific, common frustration for
millions of families and coaches who currently choose between watching a game
and capturing it.
