Self-driving technology has been in development
for over a decade, but most systems remain tied to a single vehicle or a single
company's fleet. Nuro, a Mountain View-based company founded by Dave Ferguson
and Jiajun Zhu, both former engineers at Google's self-driving project, took a
different approach. Instead of building its own car, Nuro built an autonomous
driving platform designed to work on any vehicle. The company calls it the Nuro
Driver, a Level 4 self-driving system that can be licensed by automakers and
mobility providers to turn their own vehicles into fully autonomous machines.
Nuro originally gained attention for its small,
driverless delivery robots that carried groceries and packages on public roads.
After accumulating over 1.7 million autonomous miles with zero at-fault
incidents across five years of driverless deployments, the company pivoted to
licensing its technology for passenger vehicles. That shift led to a three-way
partnership with Lucid Group and Uber Technologies, announced as one of the
largest robotaxi programs to date. Uber plans to deploy a minimum of 35,000 Lucid
vehicles equipped with the Nuro Driver across dozens of global markets.
The Nuro Driver is an AI-first system that
combines automotive-grade hardware with self-driving software designed for
reliability and cost-efficiency at scale. The sensor suite includes
high-resolution cameras, solid-state lidar, and radars that provide 360-degree
awareness around the vehicle. These sensors are integrated into the vehicle's
body along with a low-profile, roof-mounted module called Halo, which keeps the
exterior design clean while maintaining full perceptual coverage.
All sensor data is processed in real time by
the NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor, one of the most powerful automotive AI computers
available. The system interprets road conditions, predicts the behavior of
other vehicles and pedestrians, plans routes, and executes driving decisions
without human input. The Nuro Driver operates at Level 4 autonomy, meaning it
can handle all driving tasks within its operational domain without a human
driver behind the wheel. The platform is vehicle-agnostic, which means it is
designed to be integrated into different vehicle types rather than being locked
to a single manufacturer's hardware.
The robotaxi is built on the Lucid Gravity, a
luxury electric SUV with seating for up to six passengers and generous luggage
space. Lucid integrates the necessary autonomy hardware directly on its
assembly line at its factory in Casa Grande, Arizona. After assembly, Nuro
installs its self-driving software onto the vehicle. The completed robotaxi
then enters Uber's fleet, where it is owned and operated by Uber or its
third-party fleet partners and made available to riders exclusively through the
Uber app.
The in-cabin experience was designed by Uber
specifically for autonomous rides. Interactive screens let riders adjust heated
seats, climate control, and music. Riders can also contact support or request
the vehicle to pull over at any time. A real-time display shows passengers what
the robotaxi sees and where it plans to go next, including yielding to
pedestrians, slowing at traffic lights, changing lanes, and approaching the
drop-off point. On the exterior, the vehicle displays the rider's initials to help
passengers identify the correct car at pickup, replacing the role a human
driver would normally fill.
Nuro is conducting 24/7 autonomous on-road
testing with safety operators in both the San Francisco Bay Area and Houston.
The company has received a California driverless testing permit from the
Department of Motor Vehicles, a regulatory milestone that allows testing
without a human driver in the vehicle. Lucid has delivered 75 engineering
vehicles to Nuro and Uber for testing and mileage accumulation across several
US cities.
The first commercial launch is planned for the
San Francisco Bay Area, with Houston confirmed as the second market. Uber has
secured a 50,000-square-foot depot in Houston to support future fleet
operations. The program calls for expansion to dozens of additional global
markets, with offices already established in Toronto, Tokyo, Shenzhen, and
Munich. Funding has accelerated to match the deployment timeline. Nuro raised
$106 million in its Series E round, followed by an additional $203 million
backed by NVIDIA. Uber invested $300 million in Lucid and made a separate
multimillion-dollar investment in Nuro. The combined financial commitment
reflects the scale of the deployment ambition.
The robotaxi market is entering a phase where
multiple competing programs are approaching commercial launch simultaneously.
Waymo operates paid driverless services in several US cities. Tesla is running
limited driverless vehicles in Austin. Archer and Joby are building electric
air taxis for short urban flights. Each approach targets a different segment of
the transportation market, but all share a common premise: removing the human
driver from the equation to reduce costs, increase availability, and improve
safety.
The challenge facing every robotaxi program is
the gap between controlled testing and scaled commercial operations. Technology
that works reliably in one city may encounter different road conditions,
driving behaviors, and weather patterns in another. Regulatory frameworks vary
between states and countries. Public trust in riding a vehicle with no driver
remains an open question at scale. What distinguishes the Nuro-Lucid-Uber
program is its structure. Rather than building a vehicle, a self-driving system,
and a ride platform from scratch, the partnership combines a purpose-built
luxury EV, a proven autonomous driving platform with 1.7 million driverless
miles, and the world's largest ride-hailing network. Whether that combination
accelerates adoption faster than vertically integrated competitors will be one
of the defining questions in transportation over the coming years.
