Tern's HSD Compact Electric Cargo Bike Gets a Stronger Gen 3

Most cargo bikes force a trade-off: haul more weight, and the bike gets too long and heavy to live with in a city. Tern built its HSD around avoiding that trade-off, and the newest, third generation of the bike pushes that idea further. It's a compact electric cargo bike shorter than a regular bicycle, yet rated to carry a maximum gross vehicle weight of 190 kilograms, including up to 80 kilograms on its rear rack alone, enough for an adult passenger or a full grocery run.

This generation focuses on strengthening the parts of the bike that take the most stress under a heavy load. The frame has been stiffened to reduce flex, the geometry reworked with a longer wheelbase and lower center of gravity for better stability, and the motor and shifting system upgraded to handle sustained weight better than the bike's earlier versions.

What Changed Under the Frame

The new frame is built specifically to resist flex under load, paired with a longer wheelbase and a lower center of gravity that Tern says improves stability both at speed and when the bike is fully loaded. Power comes from Bosch's fifth-generation Performance and Performance PX motors, which the company states deliver more torque than the motors on the previous HSD generation while weighing 400 grams less and running with noticeably lower noise.

Shifting has also moved toward automation. The HSD now uses Bosch eShift, an electronic system that adjusts gears to reduce strain on the drivetrain when the bike is under heavy load, a common stress point on cargo e-bikes carrying passengers or cargo uphill. One version of the bike, the P10e, takes this further with the TRP EASI derailleur system, which shifts automatically based on terrain and pedaling cadence at the touch of a button, without needing a separate battery since it draws power from the bike's main battery.

Sharing One Bike Across a Family

A cargo bike is more useful when more than one person in a household can actually ride it, and the HSD's cockpit is built around quick adjustment rather than a single fixed fit. With a few quick-release levers, the cockpit adjusts to riders between 150 and 205 centimeters tall, weighing up to 130 kilograms, without needing tools. Tern frames this as central to the bike's value: a taller parent and a shorter one, or a parent and an older teenager, can each set the bike up for their own ride in seconds.

The bike is also built to fit into small living situations rather than assuming a garage or shed is available. Its patented folding handlepost lets the bike fold flat without tools for transport in a car, and separately, the whole bike can be tipped up and rolled vertically through narrow hallways, doorways, and elevators, shrinking its footprint to fit into tight apartment corners when parked.

Three Separate Safety Certifications, Not One

Rather than relying on a single certification to cover the whole bike, Tern has the HSD tested against three different standards, each covering a different part of the bike. The frame and fork are certified to EN 17860, Europe's cargo bike safety standard, tested using forces scaled to the bike's full 190-kilogram rated load. The rear rack is separately certified to ISO 11243 for its 80-kilogram maximum capacity, and the complete electrical system, covering the battery, motor, charger, wiring, and controls together, is certified to UL 2849, a standard focused on electrical and fire safety.

Beyond formal certification, Tern backs the bike with a 10-year limited warranty and a separate commitment to keep replacement parts, including the Bosch battery, available for at least seven years from purchase. The company also requires the HSD to be sold and set up through Bosch-certified local dealers rather than direct online sales, arguing that a bike this mechanically complex needs a trained mechanic's involvement from the point of sale onward, not just for later repairs.

Smart Features Built Around Theft, Not Just Convenience

The HSD connects to Bosch's Smart System, giving riders app-based control over personalized riding modes and ride data over a Bluetooth connection to their phone. Several of the connected features focus specifically on theft rather than general convenience: a rider's phone or the bike's own display can act as a digital key to lock both the motor and battery, disabling the components that make the bike functional to a thief. A smart alarm sends a notification to a rider's phone if the parked bike is disturbed, and GPS tracking lets an owner see the bike's location and movement if it's taken, with a "mark as stolen" feature intended to make resale harder and support recovery efforts.

Several individual components carry their own upgrades as well: Gates belt drive on select models replaces a traditional chain with a belt that resists salt and grime with minimal maintenance, a Suntour suspension fork smooths rough pavement while independently certified for the bike's full load rating, and an AXA frame lock shares a single key with the Bosch battery lock, so a rider isn't juggling separate keys for the frame and the electrical system.

Why a Cargo Bike Needs This Many Separate Certifications

Cargo e-bikes sit in an unusual safety position compared with either standard bicycles or full-size vehicles: they carry passengers and heavy loads like a car might, but without the crash-testing infrastructure or regulatory oversight built around motor vehicles. That gap is part of why a bike like the HSD is tested against multiple separate standards rather than one, since a frame rated for a certain load, a rack rated separately, and an electrical system rated on its own each address a different way the bike could fail under real use.

Because family and cargo bikes are still a relatively recent category compared with traditional bicycles, dedicated standards like EN 17860 are newer than the vehicles they now apply to, meaning some cargo bikes on the market today were designed before these specific tests existed. A shopper comparing cargo bikes may not always see which certifications a given model actually carries, which makes it worth checking for directly rather than assuming all cargo bikes are held to the same testing standard.
