In 2024, Switzerland launched the Swiss National AI Institute (SNAI), a
landmark initiative that marks a major step in the country’s digital future.
Spearheaded by ETH Zurich and EPFL, SNAI brings together over 800 researchers
from Swiss universities and public institutions to build large-scale artificial
intelligence systems with a clear public mission. The initiative is designed to
develop AI technologies that serve national priorities such as scientific
research, healthcare, education, and climate resilience, while staying true to
Switzerland’s core values of transparency, trust, and openness.
Rather than competing purely on scale,
Switzerland’s AI vision is centered on quality, sovereignty, and responsible
design. The government’s support for SNAI reflects a long-term strategy to
ensure that AI innovation is grounded in ethical principles, aligned with
public interest, and open to collaboration across sectors.
Switzerland’s national AI strategy is built on
a strong foundation of technical excellence, ethical commitment, and open
infrastructure. The Swiss National AI Institute stands apart through four key
elements:
This combination of openness, infrastructure,
and ethical design positions SNAI as a unique and globally relevant AI center.
To ensure long-term impact, SNAI is combining
research excellence with real-world implementation. The institute is developing
national training programs to build a skilled workforce of AI engineers,
scientists, and developers. This effort addresses Switzerland’s growing need
for digital expertise and ensures that domestic talent plays a leading role in
shaping future technologies.
SNAI is also partnering with major companies
such as Swisscom to apply AI solutions in healthcare, education, and
telecommunications. These partnerships bring research out of the lab and into
daily life. At the international level, SNAI contributes to global AI standards
and supports Switzerland’s participation in agreements like the Council of
Europe’s AI Convention.
