Traditional point-of-sale systems anchor
employees to fixed locations. Restaurant servers walk back and forth between
tables and stationary terminals to process orders. Retail workers need
customers to come to checkout counters instead of completing sales on the spot.
Square, a payment technology company owned by Block Inc., observed these
movement restrictions and developed a handheld alternative. In May 2025, the
company released Square Handheld, a device that consolidates payment
processing, inventory management, and order taking into a single portable unit.
The device measures less than one inch thick
and weighs eleven ounces. It accepts contactless tap payments and chip card
insertions through integrated readers. A built-in barcode scanner reads product
codes for inventory tracking and checkout operations. The system operates
through WiFi connectivity and includes an offline payment capability that
functions for up to twenty-four hours when the internet connection drops.
The device houses a touchscreen interface
running Square's unified point-of-sale software. The software includes seven
operational modes tailored to different business types: restaurant service,
quick service, bar operations, retail sales, appointment scheduling, and
invoicing. Users switch between modes depending on immediate business needs. A
sixteen-megapixel camera built into the device captures product images for
digital catalogs and inventory records.
The hardware incorporates an IP54 rating for
resistance to water splashes and dust exposure. Battery capacity supports
operation through typical business shifts before requiring recharge. The device
connects to network printers via WiFi for receipt printing and kitchen ticket
generation. Payment processing handles both tap and dip transactions at a rate
of 2.6 percent plus fifteen cents per transaction for standard accounts.
The system addresses specific operational
scenarios across multiple business sectors. Restaurant operations use the
device for tableside order entry that transmits directly to kitchen displays
without requiring servers to return to stationary terminals. Retail
environments deploy the device for mobile checkout anywhere on sales floors,
eliminating customer queuing at fixed registers. Service businesses utilize the
camera function to document completed work or capture client preferences for
future reference.
The barcode scanner functions for both
inventory management and point-of-sale operations. Staff scans items during
stock counts, receiving shipments, and customer checkout. The system
synchronizes inventory data across all connected devices in real time. The
software tracks stock levels, generates low-stock alerts, and maintains
purchase order records. Integration with Square's broader ecosystem connects
the handheld device to existing Square banking accounts, loyalty programs, and
customer directories.
