A New Approach to Urban Growth in Kenya

Konza Technopolis is a national smart city project developed by the Kenyan government. Located southeast of Nairobi, it’s part of the country’s Vision 2030 plan to support innovation, education, and inclusive growth. The site spans thousands of acres and aims to become a central hub for knowledge, technology, and public services.

Unlike past urban projects focused only on buildings and roads, Konza emphasizes long-term value. Its design brings together connected infrastructure, access to services, and environmental resilience. The goal is to create a livable city where people can move easily, connect digitally, and benefit from efficient resource use.

How the City Uses Smart Mobility and Rainwater Collection

One of Konza’s core design principles is smart mobility. This includes integrated public transport, walkable neighborhoods, and digital tools that help manage traffic and services more efficiently. These features aim to reduce congestion and make commuting safer and easier.

Alongside transportation, the city is exploring sustainable ways to manage water. Rainwater collection systems are part of the urban plan, allowing public spaces and buildings to reuse water for cleaning, landscaping, and storage. Together, these tools reduce strain on central utilities and support sustainable daily life.

Digital Inclusion as a City Standard

Konza also places digital inclusion at the heart of its model. The city is designed to ensure residents, students, and small businesses have access to digital tools—through Wi-Fi zones, digital skills programs, and a national data center. These services aim to close digital gaps and ensure that no group is left out of modern infrastructure.
