A regular bike and an e-bike have always been
two different purchases. Skarper, a London-based company, set out to make them
the same bike, switchable in seconds. Its removable e-bike drive system clips
onto a modified rear disc brake and adds motorized power on demand, then comes
off just as easily when a rider wants their bike back to normal, with no motor
weight to carry and no battery to charge.
The company spent years developing the system
before its first commercial units actually reached riders, and 2025 marked that
shift from prototype to product: the first completed units left the assembly
line and were delivered to customers. The drive was co-developed with Red Bull
Advanced Technologies, the motorsport engineering group behind the same team's
Formula 1 program, brought in specifically to help fit serious power into a
housing small enough to sit where a bike's disc brake normally does.
Skarper's system starts with a one-time change
to the bike itself: a rider's standard rear disc brake rotor is swapped for
Skarper's own patented DiskDrive rotor, either done by the rider or, as the
company offers, for free at a partner shop. That single swap is the only
permanent modification the bike ever receives. From then on, the drive unit
itself simply clicks onto that rotor before a ride and pops back off after,
without tools, turning the electric assist into something a rider adds or
removes rather than something built permanently into the bike.
Once attached, the unit delivers up to 76
newton-meters of torque, according to Skarper, aimed specifically at flattening
climbs that would otherwise slow a rider down or force them off the bike. The
system is built to fit road, gravel, hybrid, and touring bikes rather than one
narrow bike category, and Skarper positions the entire approach as a distinct
way of adding power, calling it a third category of e-bike alongside fully
integrated electric bikes and simpler bolt-on kits.
Because the drive needs to work with a huge
range of existing bikes rather than one standard frame, Skarper built a short
online compatibility quiz that gives a rider a personalized read on whether
their bike is ready for the system before they buy anything. For anyone who

through certified partner locations, where staff walk a rider through a test
ride suited to how they actually cycle.
Skarper states that 8 out of 10 of its riders
now cycle weekly and go further than they did before, framing the drive less as
a performance gadget and more as a way to keep people riding who might
otherwise have scaled back. Sir Chris Hoy, an 11-time world track cycling
champion and long-time Skarper backer, has described the system as opening up
cycling again for people managing an injury, keeping pace with a faster friend,
or simply making a longer commute possible.
The Red Bull Advanced Technologies
collaboration wasn't a branding exercise; Skarper describes the engineering
brief plainly as fitting a high-performance gearbox into the footprint of a
bike's rear disc brake, the kind of packaging problem motorsport engineers deal
with routinely at a much larger scale. The partnership has run for years
alongside Skarper's own development work, and the finished drive has since
picked up recognition from the Eurobike Award, the Red Dot Award, and an iF
Design Award, spanning both engineering and industrial design judging.
Skarper has also built out ways to get the
system onto a bike without buying it separately after the fact. The company has
partnered with several British bike brands so customers can order a bike and
the drive together as one bundle, and it offers the purchase through the UK's
Cycle to Work scheme, a salary-sacrifice program that lowers the effective cost

Converting an existing bike into an e-bike
isn't a new idea, and the category ranges from simple wheel-hub motors to fully
integrated systems designed into a bike from the frame up. Skarper's approach
sits deliberately in between: more removable than an integrated e-bike, but
engineered specifically around one proprietary rotor rather than working as a
universal add-on for any bike off the shelf, which means compatibility has to
be checked bike by bike rather than assumed.
That trade-off is really the open question for
the whole removable e-bike drive category, not just Skarper specifically:
whether a system built around swapping components for a temporary boost of
power can match the reliability and simplicity of a bike that's electric all
the time. Skarper's 2025 delivery milestone is a real step toward answering
that, since a claim proven only in prototypes is different from a drive
actually living on customers' bikes through real riding conditions, weather,
and daily wear. How the system holds up over years of regular use, beyond its
first year in customers' hands, is something only time and a wider base of
riders can settle.
