Samsung says two titanium layers beneath the display can reduce crease visibility while keeping the panel slim, though the claims still need independent testing.

The visible crease down the middle of a folding phone is a symptom of an
engineering problem, not just a cosmetic one. A screen that bends thousands of
times has to be flexible, but flexibility and structural support pull in
opposite directions. On 15 July 2026, Samsung announced its latest attempt to
reconcile them.
Flex Titanium is a redesigned support structure sitting beneath the
display in Samsung's next Galaxy foldables. Its central idea in foldable
phone display technology is to reinforce the panel with titanium — a metal
strong enough to survive being folded, thin enough not to bulk out the device.
Samsung has not yet released independent durability data. This is a
technology announcement ahead of a product launch, and the figures below are
the company's own.
Titanium is used where strength matters and failure isn't an option —
Samsung points to satellite antennas and the wheels of a Mars rover.
That same strength is the problem. Titanium is stiff, and a foldable
screen needs to bend. Applying a rigid metal to a component designed to flex is
the engineering contradiction Samsung says it had to solve, and its answer was
to split the job across two separate titanium parts.
The first is a titanium-alloy film that sits directly beneath the
OLED panel, supporting it from within. Samsung says it provides roughly 20
times the mechanical stiffness of the polymer film it replaces, while a
precision rolling process makes it about one-third the thickness of a human
hair — thin enough to allow a slimmer panel overall.
Beneath that sits a titanium plate supporting the whole module.
Here the company addressed flexibility directly: micro-patterned holes are
introduced into the folding section of the plate, letting a stiff metal bend
where it needs to. The plate also bonds more tightly to the display by eliminating
air gaps through what Samsung calls advanced hole-processing.
The combination, per Samsung, gives firmer support when the screen is
open while still tolerating repeated folding — the two things that usually
trade against each other.
Alongside the structural change, Samsung says the new display pairs a
high-resolution architecture with next-generation organic materials, producing
sharper resolution while lowering power draw.
Both claims are unquantified. No resolution figure, no efficiency
percentage, no fold-count rating accompanies the announcement — the specifics
Samsung typically reserves for the launch event itself.
Read plainly, Flex Titanium is an incremental refinement, not a
reinvention. Foldables already exist; this is the seventh generation of
Samsung's engineering feeding into the eighth. The company isn't claiming to
have removed the crease, only to have reduced its visibility while holding the
line on thickness and durability.
That framing is worth holding onto, because the announcement is careful
to describe improvements rather than eliminations. Whether reduced crease
visibility is noticeable in ordinary use, and whether the titanium structure
survives years of folding better than what came before, are questions this
press release doesn't answer.
