OpenRun Air 2 is the newest addition to that lineup, a set of bone conduction sports headphones designed to sit in front of the ear rather than inside or over it, leaving the ear canal completely open while still delivering sound through vibration against the skull.

Shokz already sells several open-ear product families built around different uses, including workout earbuds, communication headsets, and swimming-specific models, and OpenRun Air 2 sits within its core sports headphone line as a direct successor to the original OpenRun. Rather than reinventing the underlying technology, Shokz built this update around refining weight, battery life, and call quality on a design the company has already sold for years.

What Bone Conduction Actually Changes

Bone conduction headphones work by sending sound vibrations through the cheekbone directly to the inner ear, bypassing the eardrum entirely rather than sealing off the ear canal the way conventional earbuds do. Shokz says this open-ear listening approach helps a wearer stay aware of their surroundings, such as approaching traffic or a training partner's voice, while still hearing music or calls clearly. The company is direct about the trade-off this involves: its own product page cautions that headphone volume should still be kept at a level that preserves situational awareness, since the technology is designed to complement hearing, not add a layer of isolation.

The audio itself comes from what Shokz calls PremiumPitch 3.0, an upgraded bone conduction driver aimed at delivering deeper bass, clearer mids, and more detailed highs than earlier Shokz drivers. On the call quality side, an optimized dual-microphone layout is paired with an AI-powered noise reduction algorithm that Shokz states improves wind resistance and reduces loud echo compared with the previous OpenRun generation. That improvement is based on the company's own lab simulations of intersection-style noise scenarios rather than independent, third-party testing, and Shokz itself notes that real-world performance will vary with actual conditions.

Lighter, Smaller, and Built to Stay Put

At 26.4 grams, OpenRun Air 2 is more than 9 percent smaller than the original OpenRun by Shokz's own measurements, with a slimmer profile aimed at long stretches of continuous wear. The ear hook has been reshaped to follow the natural curve of the ear more closely, spreading pressure more evenly across a run or workout instead of concentrating it at one point of contact.

Fit security comes from a unibody frame built with memory alloy in both the ear hooks and neckband, combined with a forward-shifted center of gravity intended to reduce bounce during running, jumping, or quick changes of direction. The headphones carry an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, tested under laboratory conditions to that specific standard, though Shokz specifies they shouldn't be worn while swimming or during other underwater activity, and shouldn't be charged while wet.

Power, Pairing, and the Software Behind It

Battery life reaches up to 10 hours per charge under Shokz's own lab test conditions, a 25 percent improvement over the previous OpenRun generation, with a 5-minute quick charge adding up to 2 hours of playback when time is short. Bluetooth 6.0 handles the wireless connection, rated for a stable link up to 10 meters away from a paired device. Physical buttons on the headphones themselves handle track switching, calls, and volume without needing to reach for a phone mid-workout.

The Shokz App extends the hardware with software-based customization: four preset EQ modes, Standard, Vocal, Volume Boost, and Private, plus two additional custom modes for finer control over sound. MultiPoint pairing lets a wearer switch between two connected devices without manually re-pairing each time, a Find My Headphone feature triggers a ringing sound to help locate a misplaced pair, and the app also delivers ongoing software updates rather than locking the headphones' feature set at the point of purchase. The headphones come in two sizes, Standard and Mini, aimed at giving a wider range of ear shapes a comfortable, secure fit.

Where Open-Ear Audio Still Asks for Trade-Offs

Open-ear and bone conduction headphones occupy a specific niche within a much larger headphone market dominated by noise-isolating and active noise-cancelling earbuds. The appeal is straightforward for runners, cyclists, and anyone training outdoors: staying aware of traffic and surroundings matters more in those settings than in a quiet gym or an office. But that same open design means less isolation from wind noise, ambient chatter, and general environmental sound compared with sealed earbuds, a trade-off Shokz doesn't try to hide, given its own repeated safety guidance about keeping volume at a level that preserves awareness.

The specific performance claims behind this generation, the size reduction, the battery improvement, and the noise-reduction gains, all come from Shokz's own lab testing rather than an outside reviewer or standards body, which is worth keeping in mind when comparing the marketed numbers to how the headphones perform for an individual wearer in everyday conditions.
