Dubai
International Airport has introduced an advanced biometric immigration
experience known as the Red-Carpet Smart Corridor. Instead of queuing at a
traditional counter, eligible travelers walk through a dedicated corridor where
identity checks happen automatically.
As passengers move normally through the space,
cameras capture facial and eye data. The system verifies identity in real time,
allowing travelers to continue without presenting a passport or interacting
with an officer unless an issue is detected. The result is a smoother,
contact-free flow through immigration.
The corridor combines biometric recognition
with artificial intelligence to confirm traveler identity quickly and securely.
In simple terms, the process follows these
steps:
Each individual is typically processed in a
matter of seconds, and multiple travelers can be cleared at the same time. The
system has been deployed in selected areas of the airport and continues to
expand as part of a phased implementation.
For passengers, the experience feels noticeably
different from traditional immigration.
Key changes include:
The technology operates quietly in the
background, allowing travelers to move forward without interruption.
Dubai International Airport handles tens of
millions of passengers each year, with traffic continuing to grow. Relying
solely on manual passport control would require more counters, more space, and
more staff.
The Red-Carpet Smart Corridor addresses this
challenge by increasing processing capacity without expanding physical
infrastructure. It also aligns with Dubai’s wider push to modernize public
services through advanced technology, supporting initiatives such as the UAE
Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031 and the Dubai Economic Agenda D33.
The Red-Carpet Smart Corridor was developed by Emaratech
in collaboration with the General
Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs Dubai and Dubai Airports. Emirates
Airlines has also been involved in supporting the broader biometric travel
journey.
This multi-entity collaboration ensures secure
integration with immigration databases while fitting seamlessly into airport
operations. It also enables the system to scale responsibly as passenger
volumes grow.
