In today’s fast-evolving threat landscape, governments are turning to technology to modernize defense systems and strengthen digital resilience.

NATO’s Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA) is one of the most ambitious responses yet, bringing together startups, researchers, and public institutions to build next-generation solutions that benefit both defense and civil society.

By focusing on artificial intelligence (AI), biotechnology, and advanced materials, DIANA plays a key role in integrating AI in government operations across the alliance.

What Is DIANA?

Launched by NATO in 2021, DIANA serves as a centralized innovation platform connecting startups with government challenges. The program supports early-stage companies developing “dual-use” technologies—tools that can apply in both defense and civilian contexts. DIANA provides funding, mentorship, and access to a transatlantic network of test centers, making it easier for innovative solutions to scale.

Its core focus areas include:

  • Artificial intelligence (AI).

  • Quantum technologies.

  • Autonomy and robotics.

  • Space, biotech, and advanced materials.

  • Secure digital communications.

Enhancing Digital Infrastructure

A key goal of DIANA is to strengthen digital infrastructure within NATO countries. Many of the technologies supported by the program contribute directly to secure networks, data sharing protocols, and decision-making systems for national and transnational operations. The initiative helps bridge the gap between military needs and startup innovation, allowing governments to test and deploy emerging tech quickly and securely.

Why DIANA Matters

As digital threats and hybrid warfare evolve, NATO sees technology as its front line of defense.

DIANA not only helps protect critical infrastructure but also pushes forward the role of innovation in public administration. By investing in dual-use tech and enabling AI in government, it sets a global model for secure, future-ready governance.
