A State-Driven Boost for Innovation

In April 2025, the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO) announced new recipients of its Technology Assessment Awards through the Maryland Innovation Initiative (MII). This program, supported by the state government, helps academic researchers move their discoveries from the lab to the marketplace.

The awards give researchers the resources they need to test, develop, and improve their ideas. This support is especially useful during the early stages of innovation when many great ideas risk being abandoned due to a lack of funding or direction.

Helping Research Reach the Market

The Technology Assessment Awards offer hands-on help to move ideas closer to real use. The support includes:

  • Funding to build and test early prototypes
  • Legal guidance to protect the idea through patents
  • Market research to understand customer needs
  • Business support to plan the next steps
  • Access to TEDCO’s network of mentors and partners

Each project is carefully reviewed based on its potential to solve real-world problems, serve communities, and grow the economy. The program makes sure that research does not stop at the university level but continues to benefit society.

Working with Maryland’s Universities

The MII program works closely with leading research universities across the state, including:

  • University of Maryland, College Park
  • Johns Hopkins University
  • Morgan State University
  • Towson University
  • University of Maryland, Baltimore County

These schools produce new ideas in fields like health, clean energy, data science, new materials, and technology. Researchers and faculty apply for the awards, often teaming up with the university’s tech transfer office to get ready for the next step—like launching a startup or licensing their product to a company.

By connecting universities and industry, the program helps turn academic work into useful products and businesses.

Why This Matters for Maryland

This initiative plays an important role in Maryland’s economy. While many programs support businesses at later stages, TEDCO focuses on the very beginning—helping ideas grow when they are most fragile.

The results speak for themselves. Dozens of new startups have launched, many jobs have been created, and Maryland has attracted attention and funding from investors around the country and beyond.
