In 2025, the UK government revealed it is
exploring the launch of a nationwide digital
ID system. The goal is to provide citizens with a secure and straightforward way to access government services online, eliminating the need for paper forms, passwords, or
physical documents.
The move is inspired by Estonia, one of the
world’s leaders in digital identity. In Estonia, residents use a single digital
ID to vote, pay taxes, see medical records, and sign official documents all
online.
UK officials aim to develop a similar system to combat fraud, expedite access to public services, and enhance trust in digital
processes.
