Through its Global Innovation Clusters Program, the Canadian government is funding industry-led partnerships that bring together businesses, researchers, academic institutions, startups, and Indigenous communities. The goal is to solve real-world challenges and position Canada as a global leader in science, technology, and sustainability.

This initiative supports collaboration across key sectors including artificial intelligence, biotechnology, ocean technology, advanced manufacturing, and clean energy. By linking public funding with private innovation, the program helps turn Canadian research into high-impact solutions, products, and technologies that can scale globally.

A Model Built for Real Results

What makes the Global Innovation Clusters Program stand out is its focus on measurable outcomes. Rather than supporting isolated projects, the program builds ecosystems that encourage long-term cooperation between sectors.

As of mid-2025, the program has already made a significant impact. Nearly 35,000 new jobs have been created across the country. Private sector partners have contributed over 1 billion US dollars in investment. More than 1,300 organizations have participated in cluster projects. The initiative is expected to generate between 13 and 16 billion dollars in GDP growth by 2035.

Each cluster operates as a hub of innovation and regional development, strengthening both Canada’s economy and its global influence in emerging technologies.

Innovation in Action Across Sectors

Each of Canada’s five major innovation clusters addresses a distinct area of national importance:

  • The digital technology cluster supports AI tools for health diagnostics, cybersecurity systems, and advanced data platforms
  • The advanced manufacturing cluster helps companies adopt automation, robotics, and smart production systems
  • The protein industries cluster is improving food security through plant-based proteins, precision agriculture, and smart supply chains
  • The ocean cluster promotes sustainable marine technology, including autonomous underwater vehicles and climate-smart shipping
  • The health and biosciences cluster is accelerating biotech research, vaccine development, and personalized medicine
