A New Window into Regional Innovation

In 2025, India’s NITI Aayog introduced the Science and Technology Outlook Dashboard, a new tool to help national and state governments monitor innovation activity. The dashboard gives access to real-time data on patents, research output, workforce trends, and public investment.

Its goal is to make decision-making more transparent and data-driven, helping policymakers identify strengths and gaps in science and technology across the country. By using this platform, states can better target funding and improve their innovation strategies.

What the Dashboard Offers

This platform addresses a long-standing problem in Indian governance: lack of clear and reliable data. Here's what it includes:

  • Research and development metrics by state
  • Trends in education, talent, and patent filings
  • Tools to compare performance between states
  • Integration with national innovation policy

  • Regular updates and secure access for government users

State officials can use the dashboard to see where they stand and where they can improve. It also encourages regional planning based on hard data.

Why It Matters

As India expands its innovation economy, understanding regional differences is key. Some states have strong university systems but low patent output. Others have high startup activity but limited research funding. This tool helps answer questions like:

  • Where should new research grants be directed?
  • Which regions need better science education?
  • How can we improve tech workforce planning?
  • Which states are falling behind in innovation?

By making this data available, NITI Aayog is encouraging smarter policy, more efficient budgets, and better long-term results.

Boosting Competition and Investment

This dashboard isn’t just for government. Businesses, investors, and educators can also benefit from clear and public indicators. That means:

  1. Smarter public spending
States can focus resources where the need is highest.
  2. Healthy competition
With rankings visible, states are motivated to improve.
  3. Private sector confidence
Investors can make decisions based on real data.
  4. Better outcomes
Science and tech policies become more focused and effective.
