India has launched a major AI project called BharatGen as part of the IndiaAI Mission in 2024 and 2025. This model is designed to understand Indian languages and solve real problems in healthcare, farming, education, and city planning.
The project is led by the Department of Science
and Technology, with support from IIT Bombay and Meta’s Shrijan Center. Unlike
many AI tools made for English speakers, BharatGen is built to work with
multiple Indian languages and can take input in text, speech, or even images.
That means it can help people in rural areas, small businesses, and students
across the country.
BharatGen shows India’s commitment to becoming
a global leader in AI on its own terms and for its own people.
BharatGen is just one part of a bigger plan.
India is building a full system to support AI growth, from training data and
hardware to skilled people and research centers.
Here’s what the mission includes
Together, these tools make it easier for
startups, universities, and public services to build useful AI solutions for
Indian needs.
BharatGen is not just about tech. It is about
creating tools that work for real people in everyday life. It supports small
farmers, shop owners, doctors, and city planners with smarter, faster tools in
their own language.
India also wants to help other countries by
sharing its tools and research. That is why parts of this project are open
source. This makes it easier for others, especially in Asia, Africa, and Latin
America, to learn from and use what India has built.
By creating AI that is fair, useful, and built
in India, the country is taking a big step forward in technology and helping
others do the same.
