The Peanutcat EGG-1, made by HUBPLATFORM, a company based in Busan, South Korea, approaches the problem with a simple mechanism. Each cat wears a small RFID recognition tag, and the feeder opens only when the designated cat approaches. To every other cat in the house, the food simply stays sealed. The device earned a CES Innovation Award as an Honoree in the pet technology category, but its origins are less corporate than that suggests: the team behind it spent seven years rescuing and fostering abandoned cats, and tested the design with the 19 cats in their own care.

A Feeder Built From Rescue Experience

That background shaped the product's priorities. The smart cat feeder dispenses personalized meals matched to each cat's health profile, age, and dietary needs, addressing overeating and underfeeding at the same time. Guardians control everything through an app, where feeding schedules, portions, and each cat's eating data are logged and visible at a glance. For moments when a phone is out of reach, physical analog buttons on the device allow immediate operation — a practical detail many app-dependent devices omit.

Food safety received unusual attention. A real-time UV sterilization sensor suppresses bacterial growth inside the food container, keeping kibble fresh around the clock, and the design responds directly to real incidents of contaminated feed harming cats. The feeder stores up to two months of food, closes its lid automatically, and includes side barriers so a second cat cannot ambush from the flanks while the rightful diner eats. The whole unit uses a modular design that comes apart for easy cleaning, and its height adjusts to suit cats of different sizes and ages.

Small Functions With Practical Purposes

Several smaller features round out the system. A guardian voice playback function calls each cat to meals in the owner's own recorded voice, useful when guardians are away at work. A slow-feeder option paces cats that gulp their food, which relates directly to one of the product's measured results. During testing with real households, refined through a research project with Busan Techno Park, the outcomes were specific: underweight cats reached a healthy weight, overweight cats lost weight safely, and the frequency of vomiting among test cats dropped from two to three times daily to less than once per week.

Those numbers matter because they move the device from convenience gadget to health tool. Feeding data collected per cat also gives veterinarians something concrete to review, since a cat that quietly stops eating is often showing the first sign of illness, and a per-cat log catches that change days before a busy household would notice.

What Individual Recognition Changes for Pet Care

The EGG-1 reflects a broader direction in pet technology: treating animals in a household as individuals rather than a group. Feeding is where that shift matters most, because so many feline health problems, from obesity to kidney disease, are managed primarily through diet. A device that guarantees the right cat eats the right food in the right amount makes prescription diets and weight programs actually enforceable, something guardians previously achieved only by feeding cats in separate locked rooms.

There are practical limits to note. Each cat must wear the RFID tag for recognition to work, the system suits dry food storage rather than wet food, and app features depend on a stable connection. For single-cat homes, a simpler feeder does the job. But for the millions of households referring daily bowl disputes, the device addresses a problem that was previously solved with patience, vigilance, and closed doors — and, according to its testing, solves it measurably better.
