The way we build homes is starting to change. In response to rising costs, labor shortages, and the need for faster construction, some companies are turning to technology. One example is ICON, a company developing robotic systems that can 3D print parts of homes and buildings directly on site.
ICON has designed two main robotic systems—Phoenix and Vulcan. These machines are built to work with a 3D printing process that layers special concrete to form the walls and structure of a building.
Phoenix can print multiple parts of a home, including walls and roofs, and is built for faster, more complex projects.
Vulcan is used mainly for printing single-story homes and has already been tested in several housing developments.
Both systems use a custom concrete mix called CarbonX. It’s designed to be strong and easy to print. A separate machine called Magma mixes the material and feeds it into the printer during construction.
ICON has started using these systems in real housing projects. In Austin, Texas, it’s building homes as part of a new residential community. Each home is printed layer by layer using digital designs and robotics, with minimal need for traditional labor.
The company is also working with NASA to study how this technology could be used in space. One project is exploring whether buildings on the Moon could be printed using local materials like lunar soil.
