Most phone grips and stands follow conventional
designs, assuming users hold devices in standard ways. Bailey Hikawa, a Los
Angeles-based industrial designer, approached phone accessory design through
consultation with disability communities. The resulting product emerged from
feedback sessions with individuals experiencing varied grip strength, dexterity
limitations, and hand control differences.
The Hikawa Grip & Stand attaches to iPhones
through the MagSafe magnetic connection. The oversized silicone structure features
curved ridges surrounding a triangular opening. The sculptural form
accommodates multiple hand positions while functioning as a stand at two
viewing angles in both portrait and landscape orientations. Apple featured the
accessory as part of accessibility initiatives, initially offering limited
quantities that sold quickly before wider distribution through a partnership with
PopSockets.
The development process centered on interviews
with iPhone users experiencing disabilities affecting phone handling. The
design panel provided feedback on grip requirements, hand positioning
preferences, and strain reduction needs. This input shaped the final form's
dimensions, texture, and structural features.
The accessory uses premium silicone material
with soft-touch surface treatment. The material selection aims to minimize grip
tension requirements across different hand positions. The triangular opening
provides finger placement options while the curved exterior accommodates palm
contact. The magnetic attachment system allows removal without requiring grip
strength for detachment.
The MagSafe connection works with all iPhone
models supporting magnetic accessories. The grip functions with bare iPhones or
MagSafe-compatible cases. Users remove the accessory for wireless charging as
it contains no charging components itself.
The stand function operates through the
accessory's base geometry. Two stable positions support the phone vertically
and horizontally at predetermined angles. The silicone material provides
friction against surfaces to prevent sliding during use as a stand.
Three color options exist: high-visibility
orange swirl, speckled stone using recycled materials, and glow-in-the-dark blue.
The product designation "adaptive" indicates design modifications
specifically supporting users with varied functional abilities.
