Germany is rolling out BundID, a centralized digital ID platform aimed at simplifying online access to public services. As part of the implementation of the Online Access Act (OZG), BundID allows users to authenticate their identity electronically via a single login system managed by the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

By 2025, it is expected to become the default digital identity across federal, state, and regional administrations.

What Is BundID?

BundID (formerly “Nutzerkonto Bund”) is a central user account enabling digital authentication for a wide range of government services. Users register using an eID‑enabled identity document, such as the German ID card, electronic residence

permit, or EU/EEA eID card—and verify their identity online.

Once activated, BundID provides access to federal, state, and municipal services, along with a secure inbox for official communications.

Why BundID Matters

BundID creates a unified online identity framework, reducing the need for multiple usernames and passwords. Under the eIDAS regulation, it meets high trust levels,

enabling secure access to sensitive services like filing applications, requesting

benefits, or communicating with legal authorities.

A single, interoperable system reduces user frustration, improves government efficiency, and supports the public’s shift toward digital interactions.

Key Features of BundID

  • Centralized authentication: One login for federal, state, and local e-government portals

  • Trust levels: Supports high (eID card), substantial, and basic authentication tiers.

  • Secure inbox: Allows agencies to send documents directly to users’ BundID accounts

  • Multilingual interface: Available in German, English, Ukrainian, and Russian.

Implementation Status & Timeline

Launched in late 2020 under the OZG framework, BundID has seen rapid adoption:

  • 2.8 million accounts by May 2023.

  • Over 5 million by end of 2024.

It’s currently integrated into 43 digital administrative services, including permit applications, financial aid, and the justice notification system (“Mein Justizpostfach”).

BundID is expected to evolve into DeutschlandID, extending its reach and capabilities by 2025 or beyond.

How It Works

  1. Registration: Users sign up with an eID card (e.g., German ID or e-residence permit).

  2. Trust validation: BundID verifies identity using the PIN and eIDAS-compliant authentication methods.

  3. Access: Users can log into partner portals, retrieve forms, and securely receive documents.

  4. Trust level selection: Agencies can require specific verification tiers based on service sensitivity.
