In
June 2025, Genoa launched Project Hafnia, a new system that uses
artificial intelligence to manage traffic. It was funded by the European Union
and the Italian government and built with help from Milestone
Systems, NVIDIA, and Nebius.
The
city has narrow roads and old streets that make traffic hard to manage.
Building new roads is difficult. So, instead of adding more space, Genoa chose
to make its streets smarter. The new system collects live data from roads,
buses, and weather and uses it to control traffic signals and avoid jams. It
helps keep cars, buses, and people moving smoothly through the city.
Project
Hafnia already helps in many ways
All
of this is controlled by an AI system that watches and adjusts the roads all
day.
Since
the system began, travel has already improved. Drivers spend less time in
traffic. Buses arrive more often on time. Emergency vehicles reach their
destinations faster. Because cars move more smoothly, there is also less air
pollution.
This
system helps the city plan ahead instead of just reacting. By using smart
tools, Genoa can manage roads better without building new ones. It’s a new way
of thinking about traffic and public transport.
Genoa
plans to grow the system further
The
goal is to make the whole city move better and more safely for everyone.
