London Gatwick's new robotic valet parking service lifts cars by their tires and returns them using flight data, no keys handed over.

Handing a stranger the keys to your car has
always been the trade-off at the center of airport valet parking. London
Gatwick and Stanley Robotics, a Paris-based deep tech company, built a robotic
valet parking service that removes that trade-off entirely: a passenger drives
into a private cabin, walks away with their keys still in their pocket, and
lets a robot take over from there. The service is the first of its kind at any
UK airport.
Stanley Robotics describes itself as combining
hardware and software for outdoor logistics, built around a robot that lifts
and moves cars autonomously alongside intelligent storage-management software.
The company, founded in 2015 and majority owned by Korea's HL Robotics, states
it already operates the world's first outdoor robotic valet parking service;
the Gatwick launch extends that track record into a new market and marks what
its CEO has called a major milestone for the company in the UK specifically.
The process starts the same way a normal
drop-off would: a passenger drives into a dedicated, enclosed cabin at
Gatwick's South Terminal, switches off the engine, and confirms the booking
through an on-screen terminal. From that point, the robot takes over entirely.
A robotic platform lifts the car by its tires rather than requiring a human
driver to move it, then transports and parks it in a secure space elsewhere in
the facility, all without a person ever touching the vehicle after drop-off.
That last detail is what separates this from a
typical valet service: the passenger keeps their own keys for the entire trip,
rather than handing them to an attendant who then drives and parks the car
personally. Stanley Robotics' own FAQ addresses the obvious safety question
directly, stating that the robots continuously monitor their surroundings to
avoid obstacles while moving a vehicle, with on-site staff available if
something does go wrong.
Collection works by syncing with a passenger's
actual travel rather than a fixed pickup time. At booking, a passenger provides
their return flight details, and the system tracks that flight to have the car
ready and waiting in a collection cabin by the time they land, rather than
making them wait while a car is retrieved from a distant lot. To pick it up, a
passenger scans their booking at the cabin, and the door opens with the car
ready to drive away.
The location was chosen for convenience on both
ends of the trip: the facility sits at the top of Gatwick's Long Stay car park
in the South Terminal, close enough that passengers can walk to the terminal in
a few minutes, with a free shuttle bus available for anyone who'd rather not
walk. Gatwick has framed the service as part of a broader push to cut down the
time and stress passengers spend searching for parking before a flight.
The service isn't open to every car or every
travel pattern just yet. Stanley Robotics' published limits cover most
standard-sized vehicles, capping wheelbase at 3.3 meters, height at 2.3 meters,
wheel diameter at 21 inches, and total weight at 2.6 tonnes. Booking also comes
with early-stage restrictions Stanley Robotics has stated will ease as the
service scales: a minimum five-day length of stay, no entry or exit on weekends
at launch, and bookings only accepted between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Advance booking
is required outright, since the system doesn't support passengers arriving
without a reservation.
Gatwick's own materials frame the launch as one
piece of a larger, multi-year investment program at the airport, and Stanley
Robotics has described the partnership as addressing Gatwick's parking capacity
challenges specifically as passenger numbers continue to grow. For Stanley
Robotics, landing a deployment at an airport handling more than 43 million
passengers a year adds a substantial, high-visibility reference point to a
company whose prior projects have run at a smaller scale.
Automated and robotic parking systems aren't
new on their own; various forms of automated multi-story parking have existed
for years, mostly aimed at packing more vehicles into less physical space.
What's different about Stanley Robotics' approach is that the customer never
hands over a key at any point, and the system times a car's return to an actual
flight rather than a guessed pickup window, addressing the anxiety of an
unfamiliar person driving a passenger's car rather than only the space problem
itself.
The bigger, unanswered question is how well a
system like this holds up once it's running at a full airport's actual scale
and pace rather than an initial rollout with built-in restrictions. Gatwick and
Stanley Robotics have deliberately limited early bookings to weekday hours,
stays of five days or more, and no weekend transitions, an approach that lets
both companies expand gradually rather than opening to unrestricted demand on
day one. How quickly those limits actually loosen, and how the system performs
once it's handling the kind of volume and unpredictability a major airport sees
every day, will only become clear as the service moves past its first weeks of
live operation.
