France Identity

France has introduced a national digital identity app—France Identité—that allows users to verify their identity online, generate one-time credentials, and access services using secure authentication. The app reflects France’s broader strategy to digitize public services while protecting user privacy.

What Is France Identité?

France Identité is a mobile application developed by ANTS (Agence nationale des titres sécurisés). It allows French citizens to:
  • Digitally read their national ID via NFC.

  • Generate one-time, digitally signed credentials.

  • Log in securely to public services with FranceConnect+.

To activate the app, users must have:
  • The new national ID card (launched in 2021).

  • A smartphone compatible with Android 11+ or iOS 16.6+.

  • Be at least 18 years old.

Why It Matters

Before France Identité, individuals often had to submit physical photocopies, manage multiple login systems, or rely on manual verification. The new app streamlines this process by enabling:

  • Trusted identity verification through FranceConnect+.

  • Paperless sharing of ID data via one-time credentials.

  • Secure integration with public platforms from one place.

This makes it easier and safer for users to interact with digital public infrastructure.

Key Features

  • One-time credentials – Time-limited, reusable digital documents used for official verification.

  • FranceConnect+ support – Secure login system for high-trust public services.

  • Digital driving licence – Recently added to store and share driving credentials in-app.

  • Mobile ID – All credentials are stored securely on users’ smartphones.

  • Cloud identity platform compatibility – Aligned with government-level digital identity frameworks.

Rollout and Adoption

The beta version of France Identité launched in 2022 and expanded gradually. As of 2024, the app became widely available with broader support for regional town halls. Integration of the digital driving licence followed in early 2025, and the system now supports more than 1,400 public services.

New national ID cards are now issued with NFC capabilities to allow users to activate their app in a single step during the in-person ID pickup process.
