The UK government has confirmed that a digital driving licence will be available later in 2025 via the GOV.UK Wallet

This initiative allows individuals to securely store and present their driver’s licence on a smartphone—simplifying identity verification, age checks, and access to services, while maintaining data control.

What Is the Digital Driving Licence?

The digital driving licence is a mobile version of the official photocard, stored in the GOV.UK Wallet.

It includes your licence photo and entitlements, and can be used to verify your identity, right to drive, and age—online or in person—with enhanced security features like facial recognition and device-based encryption.

Why It Matters

Traditional identity checks often require sharing excessive information. The digital driving licence enables selective disclosure, allowing presentation of only essential data—such as “over 18” verification—without compromising full personal details. This supports secure and efficient credential use across services.

When Will It Launch?

  • Summer 2025: Official launch of GOV.UK Wallet, with the Veterans Card as the first credential.

  • Late 2025: Pilot of the digital driving licence, accessible to eligible drivers across the UK.

  • By end of 2027: All government-issued cards—including DBS checks, Blue Badges, and driving licences—must be available digitally.

How It Works

  • Stored within the secure GOV.UK Wallet app on iOS/Android.

  • Access requires GOV.UK One Login, facial recognition, and other smartphone security.

  • Credentials are verified upon sharing—no central data repository needed.

Potential Use Cases

  • Buying age-restricted items (alcohol, DIY supplies) with minimal data.

  • Domestic flights requiring ID checks.

  • Renting vehicles, verifying student or veteran status.

  • Interactions with banks, landlords, and employers—all utilizing the digital ID format securely.

Looking Ahead

This initiative is part of a broader plan to modernize public technology—expected to save £45 billion—and complement the upcoming GOV.UK App, which includes appointments, passport reports, and AI-powered support.

By integrating identity into everyday digital workflows, the government aims to make services more efficient and user-centered.
