A
rider stands at the center of a compact frame, with four enclosed propellers beneath
them, and steers by leaning their body rather than touching a joystick or set
of pedals. That's CoolFly's Urban, a standing-position personal aircraft the
Hangzhou-based company describes as the first of its kind, unveiled at a public
launch event in Hangzhou on August 13, 2026. Unlike a seated eVTOL cabin, Urban
has no cockpit at all: the pilot's own posture is the control input.
CoolFly
built Urban to operate under ultralight aircraft rules, meaning it can legally
be flown without a pilot's license, medical certificate, or formal
airworthiness certification, according to the company. That regulatory position
is central to how CoolFly frames the aircraft: not as a commuting vehicle, but
as something aimed at recreational flying, short hops, and tourism.
Urban's
flight control runs through what CoolFly calls weight-shift sensing, where the
pilot's own body movement supplies the steering input the aircraft responds to.
That system sits on top of the company's proprietary NA80 flight controller,
which CoolFly states it developed in-house specifically for manned eVTOL
aircraft rather than adapting a drone-style controller not built for carrying a
person. According to the company, the aircraft runs triple-redundant systems
that detect a fault, isolate the failed unit, and reconfigure automatically,
aiming to keep the aircraft stable through a single-point failure rather than
losing control outright.
Propulsion
comes from eight power units arranged in a quad-axis, eight-rotor layout, each
enclosed within the frame rather than left as exposed spinning blades. CoolFly
positions this enclosed design as a direct safety choice compared with
open-rotor eVTOLs, and states the aircraft can continue flying safely even if a
single motor fails. The whole platform runs on all-electric propulsion, which
the company states means zero operating emissions and quiet running compared
with a combustion-powered alternative.
According
to CoolFly's own published specifications, Urban has a maximum takeoff weight
of 254 kilograms and measures 2,200 by 2,200 by 1,768 millimeters. Flight time
is rated at 11 minutes, based on company testing with a 70-kilogram pilot, with
the company itself noting that actual flight time will vary with payload,
weather, and how the aircraft is flown. Top speed is limited to 100 km/h, and
CoolFly designed the aircraft to operate in low-altitude airspace rather than
at conventional aircraft cruising heights.
The
aircraft carries an IP65 rating for water and dust resistance and is built to
keep operating across a temperature range of -20°C to 85°C, according to
CoolFly. Sensing runs through an aviation-grade inertial measurement unit, the
same general category of sensor used in conventional aircraft to track
orientation and movement. CoolFly lists Urban's intended application fields as
urban air mobility, tourism, outdoor activities, and emergency response.
Because
Urban carries no enclosed cabin and no seat, CoolFly built several dedicated
safety systems around the pilot standing exposed on an open frame. The company
states the aircraft includes a race-car-inspired spaceframe safety cell,
hands-free hover and emergency functions a pilot can trigger without needing to
physically stabilize the aircraft first, and a ballistic parachute system rated
for rapid deployment if something goes wrong mid-flight. A radar-driven
automatic landing system and a redundant battery propulsion architecture round
out the systems CoolFly points to as central to Urban's safety design.
At
its official launch, CoolFly also announced insurance partnerships covering
manned aircraft operations, including coverage arranged specifically for Urban
and its seated Dream series, according to the company's own newsroom. Alongside
the launch, CoolFly signed a cooperation agreement with the Zhejiang Institute
of Security Technology aimed at developing training programs for the personal
aircraft sector, an acknowledgment that flying a device like this safely still
requires some structured instruction even without a formal license requirement.
Operating
under ultralight rules is a genuine, checkable regulatory category, not a
marketing exaggeration, and CoolFly's insurance partnerships and
training-program agreement suggest the company is treating the real-world
safety implications seriously rather than only leaning on the license-free
framing. That said, "no license required" describes a legal category,
not a claim that the aircraft is inherently easy or risk-free to operate.
Standing exposed on an open frame at low altitude, controlling flight through
body lean, is a meaningfully different piloting experience from anything most
people have tried before, license or not.
The
aircraft's flight time is also a real, practical constraint worth stating
plainly: 11 minutes per charge, under company-controlled test conditions,
leaves little margin for error, unexpected weather, or a longer-than-planned
flight path. CoolFly is upfront that real-world flight time will vary, which is
an honest disclosure, but it also means a new pilot's first real flights will
be short by design, with limited room to recover from a mistake before needing
to land. As with any newly launched personal aircraft category, how these
safety systems perform outside a company-run demonstration, across a wider base
of first-time pilots with varying skill and judgment, is something only
real-world use will show.
