A Trackpad Where Nobody Thought to Put One

The tongue is one of the most precise muscles humans have, capable of movements finer than most fingers can manage. Augmental, a San Francisco company spun out of the MIT Media Lab, built its entire product on that overlooked fact. The MouthPad is a touchpad worn on the roof of the mouth, shaped like a slim dental retainer, that lets people control their phones, tablets, and computers entirely hands-free. After two years in a restricted early access program, it has just gone on public sale across the United States for the first time, at $1,400.

The people it was built for explain why it matters. More than 100 users living with mobility challenges, including quadriplegia and spinal cord injuries, shaped the device through daily use, some wearing it up to 16 hours a day. Their words on the company's site carry the story better than any specification: one user took photos independently for the first time in her life, another got chess back after years away from the game, and a third retired the 12-inch mouth stylus he had relied on to touch his screen. A waitlist of more than 6,300 people now includes surgeons, pianists, mechanics, and parents, all wanting digital control when their hands are busy or unavailable.

How a Mouth Becomes a Mouse

The device works through layered gestures, and every function has a movement. The tongue drives the cursor across a pressure-sensitive trackpad on the palate, or users can switch to head-tracking mode and steer the cursor by moving their head instead. A tongue press performs a left click and holds for click-and-drag, a sip gesture triggers a right click, and dedicated gestures handle scrolling and swiping. The second generation, released earlier this year, added custom keyboard shortcuts activated by tongue gestures and remappable trackpad controls that users have applied to gaming and 3D modeling.

Connection is deliberately ordinary. The MouthPad pairs over Bluetooth exactly like a wireless mouse, works with macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android, and switches instantly between multiple devices. A companion app tunes click strength, touch sensitivity, and cursor speed, with all settings stored on the device itself, and it remains fully compatible with voice control software. Speed is no longer the compromise it once was in assistive technology: one daily user recently set a device record of 10.47 bits per second in a cursor-control task, with launch coverage noting performance rivaling brain-computer interfaces on some tasks, achieved without surgery.

Custom Built, Nearly Invisible

Every MouthPad is manufactured for exactly one mouth. After ordering, the customer completes a quick 3D dental scan at a local dentist or scanning provider, and Augmental 3D prints the device from that scan in dental resin, encapsulating the electronics for safety. The result is about one millimeter thick and roughly ten grams, sitting invisibly against the palate with minimal impact on speech. The battery runs for more than seven hours of continuous use, recharges in about an hour and a half in its case, and carries standard battery safety certifications. Orders ship within six months of the scan, with an online onboarding platform and support team included.

There are honest boundaries to note. The device is available only in the United States for now; it is not covered by insurance; the required dental scan adds roughly $100, and each unit fits only its owner. Users clean it like a retainer, wear it through the day, and remove it for meals and sleep.

A Keyboard You Whisper To

Alongside the public launch, Augmental introduced the MouthPad's companion: VOX, a wearable microphone pendant now in beta at $200. Inspired by the stethoscope, VOX captures sound through the body as well as through the air, letting users dictate at a whisper in a library or speak at low volume in a noisy cafe while the device rejects surrounding conversations. It activates only deliberately, by a button press or, when paired with the MouthPad, a tongue gesture, and Augmental has committed the proceeds of the first beta batch to funding MouthPads for people in need.

Together the two devices form what the company calls Skinware, body-coupled interfaces meant to meld with the person rather than sit on them. The MouthPad points and clicks, VOX types and dictates, and the combination covers the two halves of computing that keyboards and mice have owned for fifty years, without requiring a single hand.

Why an Interface Born From Necessity Reaches Everyone

Assistive technology has a familiar pattern: tools built for people who need them often end up serving everyone, the way curb cuts, audiobooks, and voice assistants did. The MouthPad's public launch is that pattern in motion, moving from a clinical rollout for users with mobility impairments to open availability for anyone whose hands are occupied, injured, or simply full. The waitlist of surgeons and mechanics suggests the demand was always broader than the category.

The deeper significance sits in what it makes unnecessary. Achieving hands-free computer control at this speed previously pointed toward brain implants and operating rooms. A retainer-shaped trackpad, custom printed from a dental scan and paired like any Bluetooth mouse, reaches comparable performance for some tasks with nothing more invasive than a trip to the dentist. Sometimes the frontier of human-computer interaction turns out to be surprisingly close to home.
