Firecoat

As bushfires grow more frequent and destructive, traditional building materials are being pushed to their limits. In response, a team from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and Flame Security International (FSI) has developed FSA FIRECOAT—a paint designed to protect homes by actively resisting fire.

The innovation introduces a low-cost, easy-to-apply barrier that could offer crucial extra minutes in the face of a fast-moving blaze.

How It Works

FIRECOAT is an intumescent coating, meaning it expands when exposed to extreme heat. When fire hits the surface, the paint forms a thick char layer that insulates the building beneath, slowing the spread of flames and heat damage. It’s designed to be applied like regular paint, but tested to withstand bushfire-level conditions.

The product has achieved a BAL-40 rating, making it certified for use in high fire-risk zones where radiant heat and embers are a serious threat.

Development and Collaboration

The project was born out of a five-year research effort at UNSW in partnership with FSI. A key challenge was getting the fireproofing layer to stay in place on vertical surfaces—a crucial feature when dealing with external walls and support beams.

The innovation has already won recognition, including the Knowledge Commercialisation Australasia Award for best industry-research collaboration.

Making It Accessible

One of the major advantages of FIRECOAT is that it's not just for commercial use. It can be applied with standard brushes or rollers, doesn’t require industrial equipment, and works under a standard topcoat, making it suitable for everyday homeowners as well as builders.

It’s currently available in Bunnings stores across Australia, with plans to enter the U.S. market through ACE Hardware.
