Why Charging Became the Problem Solarky Set Out to Solve

Picture a small car parked outside an office from nine to five. Nobody touches it all day, yet by evening it has earned 50 km of driving. That is the promise behind the sunV, and it exists because electric cars have a stubborn catch: you need somewhere to plug them in. For millions of drivers in crowded cities and emerging markets, that place simply does not exist. Public chargers are rare, home chargers cost money and require private parking, and electricity bills keep climbing. Many people who want to drive electric simply cannot, and Chinese automaker Solarky Mobility Technologies built its first solar electric car, launched in late 2025, for exactly those drivers.

How the sunV's Rooftop Solar Panel Turns Sunlight into Free Driving

So, how does it work? The roof carries a solar panel of 1.6 square metres, which can extend to 3.2 square metres to catch even more light. Whenever the car sits outside, at work, at home, or in a parking lot, the panel feeds energy straight into the battery. No cable, no station, no effort. According to the company, this adds around 50 km of free driving every day, which is more than most people's entire commute.

Of course, the sun cannot do everything. Therefore, the sunV also carries a regular battery that stores enough power for 151 km on a full charge. Together, the two create a simple routine: sunlight covers the everyday errands, and the battery steps in whenever the journey runs longer or the sky stays grey for a week. The battery itself uses lithium iron phosphate, a type known for staying safe and stable in heat. That matters for a self-charging vehicle designed to spend its life parked in the sun.

What Driving the sunV Actually Feels Like in the City

The sunV is built for city life, and everything about it shows that. At just over three metres long, it is one of the smallest four-seaters on the road, slipping into parking spots that ordinary cars have to pass by while carrying a family and their shopping without complaint. Its electric motor gives it a top speed of 80 kph, which is modest on purpose. This solar electric car is not made for highways. Instead, it is made for the stop-and-go rhythm of daily streets, where efficiency beats speed.

One detail stands out, however. The sunV sits 190 mm off the ground, which is higher than most small cars. That extra clearance lets it handle bumpy roads, rough surfaces, and streets that are far from perfect. In other words, this is a car designed for the real world, not just smooth city centers. Small footprint, gentle power, tough battery, and high clearance all point to one goal: affordable daily transport in sunny places where chargers are hard to find.

Where the Solar Electric Car Is Finding Its First Homes

Look at where the sunV is launching, and you will notice a pattern. Every market gets plenty of sun. In Indonesia, the car is already on sale under the "MAB" badge through a partnership with PT Mobil Anak Bangsa. In Thailand, Solarky teamed up with the Prawit Automotive Group to bring the model to local roads. The company is also preparing for South Africa, where it filed a trademark in January 2025 and registered the sunV's design patent in March 2026. Sunny skies, busy cities, and few chargers make these places a natural fit.

The ambitions go beyond one car, though. Solarky signed a strategic cooperation with Academician Chen Qingquan, a pioneering figure in electric vehicle research in Asia, to develop solar vehicle technology together. The company is barely three years old, backed by investors including Innoangel Fund and Tsinghua Capital, and already selling in multiple countries. For an automaker that young, the sunV looks less like a finished product and more like an opening move.

Why a Self-Charging Vehicle Changes What Driving Costs

Here is why all of this matters. A normal electric car moves your fuel costs to your electricity bill and chains you to charging stations. A solar electric car that gains 50 km every day makes much of your driving completely free. For a delivery rider in Jakarta, a commuter in Bangkok, or a small business in Johannesburg, that is not a small difference. It can decide whether driving electric is possible at all.

Naturally, there are limits. Cloudy days give less range; the car must park outdoors to charge, and its size keeps it in the city. Even so, the sunV proves something important. The solar electric car is no longer a concept on a stage. It is in production, in showrooms, and in several countries. As solar panels keep improving, the share of driving that sunlight can cover will only grow.
