Five point eight billion people use mobile
phones. Two point two billion of them cannot access cellular broadband. Not
because they do not have phones. Because 87 percent of Earth's surface has no
mobile coverage at all. Oceans, mountains, deserts, rural communities, and
remote regions sit completely outside the reach of traditional cell towers. The
infrastructure required to close that gap through ground-based networks would
take decades to build and cost more than any commercial model can support. AST
SpaceMobile is building the answer from space instead.
The SpaceMobile Network is built around
BlueBird satellites that deliver full broadband directly to standard
smartphones. No special device. No hardware modification. No new app. The phone
already in a person's pocket connects to the SpaceMobile Network exactly as it
would connect to a ground-based cell tower, at 4G and 5G speeds, from anywhere
on Earth. Video calls, web browsing, and everyday apps all work normally. The
network is designed to integrate seamlessly with existing mobile operator
infrastructure, meaning coverage gaps disappear for subscribers without any
change to how they use their phone or which operator they use. AST SpaceMobile
has partnered with over 50 mobile network operators representing nearly three
billion combined subscribers, including AT&T, Verizon, Google, Bell,
Rakuten, and STC.
The applications of space-based cellular
broadband extend across every environment where ground-based coverage fails.
Remote rural communities gain access to healthcare, education, financial
services, and employment opportunities that connectivity unlocks. Emergency
response teams coordinate rescue and relief operations when terrestrial
networks are damaged or destroyed. Maritime crews stay connected and operate
safely throughout journeys that take them far beyond coastal coverage.
Agricultural operations in remote areas have access to real-time data on weather,
crops, and market prices. In-flight passengers connect from takeoff to landing
without dedicated aircraft Wi-Fi systems. Defence operations coordinate
securely in challenging environments where traditional infrastructure cannot
reach. The same network serves all of these simultaneously.
AST SpaceMobile's stated mission is to
eliminate the connectivity gaps faced by today's mobile subscribers and bring
broadband to the billions who remain unconnected. The BlueBird satellite
constellation is designed to achieve global coverage, with each generation of
satellites expanding both capacity and reach. The Next Gen BlueBird programme
advances the network further, increasing performance and coverage density as
the constellation grows.
