OceanAlpha's Dolphin 3 is a remote-controlled water rescue robot that travels at 16 mph, tows up to one metric ton, and lets rescuers save drowning swimmers without entering the water.

Drowning
remains one of the leading causes of unintentional death worldwide. Traditional
water rescue depends on a lifeguard physically entering the water, swimming to
the victim, and bringing them back. Every second of that process costs time,
and the rescuer faces real danger from currents, waves, and panicking swimmers.
Traditional life rings can be thrown, but they lack accuracy and cannot propel
themselves toward a target. OceanAlpha, a Hong Kong-registered robotics company
with research and development operations in Zhuhai, China, built the Dolphin 3
as a water rescue robot designed to remove that risk entirely. Instead of
sending a person into the water, the operator sends the device.
The
Dolphin 3 is a smart, self-propelled rescue device that a rescuer controls
remotely from shore or a boat. It navigates directly to a distressed swimmer,
who can then hold onto the device or lie across it and be carried back to
safety. OceanAlpha holds more than 90 patents related to unmanned surface
vessels and employs over 100 engineers. The Dolphin 3 is already deployed
across multiple countries, including Germany, Chile, Spain, Qatar, South
Africa, and China.
The
Dolphin 3 reaches a top speed of 7 meters per second, approximately 16 miles
per hour, when traveling unloaded toward a person in distress. OceanAlpha
states this is three times faster than Olympic-level swimmers and roughly twice
as fast as the first-generation Dolphin, which reached 3.6 meters per second.
When returning with a survivor holding on, the device slows to a controlled 5
kilometers per hour to maintain stability and safety in the water.
The
towing capacity is one metric ton, approximately 2,200 pounds. This means the
device can potentially tow multiple survivors, a small lifeboat, or debris from
the water in a single trip. Operators control the Dolphin 3 from a distance of
up to 800 meters, roughly half a mile, which covers most beach, lake, and port
rescue scenarios. The device supports dual control modes: a remote control unit
for standard operation and a local manual override for situations requiring the
operator to be physically closer to the action.
The
device activates automatically the moment it contacts the water. There is no
manual startup, no switch to flip, and no boot-up delay. In an emergency where
every second matters, this eliminates a step that could cost critical time. The
Plus version includes a built-in directional sensor that auto-rights the device
from a complete capsize in under two seconds. Combined with the instant
activation, this means a rescuer can throw the Dolphin 3 into rough surf
without worrying about orientation. The device corrects itself and begins
moving immediately.
An
onboard camera streams live 1080p HD video to a waterproof display held by the
operator. This gives the rescue team a direct view of the water surface from
the device's perspective, allowing them to track the survivor's location, spot
debris, or identify hazards in real time. In low-light conditions, rough water,
or at a significant distance from shore, this video feed provides situational
awareness that watching from the beach cannot match.
The
Dolphin 3 includes an automatic return system that activates in two failure
scenarios. If the remote control signal is lost, the device uses GPS
pathfinding to navigate itself back to the operator's location autonomously. If
the battery drops below 15 percent, a threshold that can be customized, the
device also initiates an automatic return. This safeguard prevents the
equipment from drifting out to sea after a signal disruption or power failure,
protecting both the device and ensuring it remains available for subsequent
rescues.
The
dual control system adds another layer of reliability. If the remote control
unit experiences interference or failure, the local manual override allows an
operator who is physically near the device to take direct control. Having both
options available means there is always a backup method of guidance during
fast-moving rescue situations where conditions change rapidly.
The
Dolphin 3 has moved beyond testing into operational deployment in several
countries. In Germany, the German Life-Saving Association has deployed the
device at 14 open water swimming locations as part of a formal testing program.
The program was launched after Germany recorded its highest number of drowning
deaths since the pandemic, with over 400 fatalities in a single season. In
Chile, DP World Lirquén became the first port in the country to deploy the
Dolphin 3, using it to respond to potential overboard incidents at the
commercial port. A sea rescue demonstration was also conducted in Laracha,
Spain, led by local distributor Nordés Tech. The device is in consistent use by
lifeguarding organizations in China as well.
The broader question facing robotic water rescue is whether devices like the Dolphin 3 supplement human lifeguards or eventually replace parts of the traditional rescue chain. The device does not eliminate the need for trained personnel. An operator must still assess the situation, deploy the device, and guide it to the right location. What it does change is the risk equation. The rescuer stays on dry ground while the water rescue robot handles the most dangerous part of the operation: reaching the victim in open water. Whether this approach becomes standard practice in coastal and port safety will depend on how widely organizations adopt the technology and how it performs across a broader range of water conditions and emergency scenarios.
