A complete strength training setup
traditionally takes a room of its own: a rack of dumbbells, a barbell and
plates, a bench, and enough open floor to move between them. Most homes do not
have that space, which is part of why so many people rely on a gym elsewhere
instead of training at home. Tonal, a company based in San Francisco, built its
home gym system around a different premise: replace the weights themselves with
something that mounts flat against a wall.
Tonal 2, the company's current generation
system, uses digital weight technology instead of physical plates. Two
adjustable arms extend from a wall-mounted unit and generate resistance
electromagnetically, meaning the machine can change how heavy a movement feels
by adjusting an electrical current rather than someone physically swapping
plates. The system supports more than 300 exercises across the upper body,
lower body, and core, replacing a room of separate equipment with a single unit
installed against one wall.
The core function of Tonal 2 is adaptive
weight, and the electromagnetic system allows resistance up to 250 pounds per
arm. Because the weight is generated digitally rather than mechanically, it can
change mid-exercise in ways a physical dumbbell cannot. Chains mode increases
resistance as a lift progresses, imitating the effect of lifting actual chains.
Eccentric mode adds extra resistance specifically during the lowering phase of
a movement, a phase that free weights cannot target independently. Smart flex
mode adjusts resistance continuously throughout a lift based on the body's
natural strength curve.
The same digital control makes drop sets, a
common but normally cumbersome strength training technique, simple to execute.
Instead of stopping to physically reduce a weight after fatigue sets in, a user
presses a button on Tonal's smart handles, and the resistance drops instantly,
letting a set continue without a pause. The system also includes Aero mode,
which combines cardio intervals with resistance training in the same session, a
format the original Tonal system did not offer.
Tonal 2 includes a built-in high-resolution
camera called Smart View, which the company states analyzes 500 data points per
second during a workout. The camera tracks body position and movement patterns
in real time, and the system uses that information to provide coaching cues
during a set or generate short review clips afterward, similar in format to a
coach reviewing game film with an athlete. Users can review these clips in the
companion mobile app to see specific points in a lift where their form changed.
Physically, the system attaches several
interchangeable accessories to its two adjustable arms. Smart handles allow
single-arm or two-arm movements with weight that can be turned on or off at the
press of a button. A smart bar and control module support barbell-style
movements including bench press and deadlifts. A rope attachment adds pulling
and pushing variations, including exercises specific to Aero mode. The complete
system covers 15 workout types in total, spanning strength training, Aero HIIT,
yoga, and mobility work, all delivered through the same wall-mounted unit.
Beyond individual exercises, Tonal 2 builds
personalized training plans based on a person's stated goals, whether that is
building muscle, improving endurance, or increasing mobility. The system tracks
progress across sessions and adjusts recommended resistance and exercises
accordingly, aiming to help someone continue progressing rather than plateauing
at a fixed weight over time. Combined with the real-time form feedback from
Smart View, the system functions less like a single piece of equipment and more
like a continuously adjusting training program.
The broader idea behind digital weight systems
is replacing bulk with control. A traditional home gym needs enough physical
weight plates to cover every exercise at every difficulty level, which takes
considerable space. A system that generates resistance electronically needs
only the wall space for the unit itself, while still offering a very wide range
of resistance and exercise variations through software rather than additional
hardware.
There are real trade-offs to weigh. The system
depends on its software and camera functioning correctly, unlike simple
mechanical weights that cannot malfunction, and any digital fitness system
requires a level of comfort with connected technology that not every user has.
For people who lack the space, equipment, or guidance to train effectively at
home, however, a wall-mounted system that adjusts its own resistance and tracks
form automatically addresses two of the most common barriers to consistent strength
training: limited space and lack of feedback.
