Handheld cameras have always forced creators
into a trade-off. Compact devices sacrifice image quality and lens versatility.
Professional cinema cameras deliver stunning footage but require rigs, gimbals,
and crew to operate. DJI, a Shenzhen-based company that pioneered the pocket
gimbal camera category, designed the Osmo Pocket 4P to narrow that gap. It is a
dual-lens pocket gimbal camera that combines two physical lenses, a three-axis
mechanical stabilizer, and cinematic-grade imaging into a device small enough
to hold between two fingers.
DJI unveiled the Osmo Pocket 4P at the Cannes
Film Festival, positioning it alongside independent filmmakers, documentary
creators, and visual storytellers working on professional productions. The
company describes it as the convergence of its professional cinematography
heritage, built through platforms like the DJI Ronin and DJI Inspire, with the
extreme portability of the Pocket series. It is available in two colors,
including a new Pearl White option.
The Osmo Pocket 4P features two physical lenses
that cover different focal lengths. The wide-angle lens uses a one-inch CMOS
sensor with a 20mm equivalent focal length and an f/2.0 aperture, focusing as
close as 0.09 meters. It is suited for landscapes, daily vlogs, and group
shots. The med-tele lens uses a 1/1.28-inch CMOS sensor with a 60mm equivalent
focal length and an f/1.8 aperture, focusing from 0.2 meters. Its wider
aperture creates natural background bokeh that separates the subject from the
surroundings, making it suited for portrait close-ups and distant details.
Only one lens operates at a time. The device
automatically switches between them based on the zoom level, covering focal
lengths from wide-angle to medium telephoto without digital cropping. The
wide-angle camera delivers 17 stops of dynamic range and supports 10-bit D-Log
2 color, which captures a flat color profile that professional editors can
grade in post-production to match specific cinematic looks. The three-axis
mechanical gimbal stabilizes both lenses, keeping footage smooth during
handheld movement, walking, or tracking a subject.
The camera includes ActiveTrack 8.0, a
subject-tracking system that locks onto a person, animal, or object and keeps
them centered in the frame even at up to 12x zoom. Two physical buttons beneath
the touchscreen provide quick zoom control. A single press switches between 1x
and 3x zoom. A double press jumps to 6x. Pressing and holding zooms smoothly at
a constant adjustable speed. These physical controls allow zoom adjustments
without touching the screen, which matters when shooting in motion or operating
the camera with one hand.
The Osmo Pocket 4P charges to 80% in 18 minutes
and to full capacity in 32 minutes through USB-C with PD fast-charging
protocol. It includes 103 gigabytes of built-in storage and supports microSD
card expansion for longer sessions. Footage transfers to a computer through a
USB 3.1 wired connection or to a phone through the DJI Mimo app. The camera
also supports pet tracking and Glamour Effects for content creators who work
primarily with social media formats.
DJI designed the Osmo Pocket 4P to work within
an existing accessory ecosystem. The Battery Handle attaches to the bottom of
the camera and extends recording time by approximately 150 minutes. It supports
hot swapping, meaning the handle's battery takes over when the internal battery
runs out, so recording does not stop. The Mini Tripod provides stable support
for static shots like interviews, time-lapses, or product photography. The
Expansion Adapter adds connectivity for external accessories.
Each accessory is sold separately and connects
to the camera without tools. The modular approach means creators can configure
the camera differently depending on the shoot. A solo vlogger walking through a
city might use the camera alone. A filmmaker shooting a seated interview might
add the tripod and battery handle. A documentary crew might pair it with
external audio through the expansion adapter. The DJI Care Refresh protection
plan is available for coverage against accidental damage, including collision
and deformation.
The pocket gimbal camera category exists
between smartphones and dedicated cinema cameras. Smartphones are always
available but offer limited lens options and digital stabilization that cannot
match a mechanical gimbal. Cinema cameras deliver superior image quality but
are heavy, expensive, and require setup time. A dual-lens pocket gimbal camera
like the Osmo Pocket 4P occupies the space where a creator needs more than a
phone but cannot justify carrying a full production rig.
At Cannes, filmmakers and documentary creators
explored the device as a companion tool for capturing behind-the-scenes
footage, scouting locations, and shooting sequences where a larger camera would
be impractical or draw too much attention. The device does not replace a cinema
camera for primary production. Its value sits in situations where portability,
speed, and discretion matter more than maximum resolution or interchangeable
lenses. Whether pocket gimbal cameras continue to close the gap with professional
equipment depends on how much further sensor technology, stabilization, and
computational imaging can advance within the size and thermal constraints of a
handheld device.
